Most of us, in these times, make use of one of the many multimedia players that we have at our fingertips. Some are better known than others, while there are both paid and free. There is no doubt that one of the best known and most used proposals of this type is VLC Media Player.
This is a software for the reproduction of multimedia contents that does not stop improving on the part of its developers, Videolan . Thus, little by little we are obtaining the latest technologies regarding the reproduction of both video and audio content. This is something that many of you have probably been able to verify first-hand, since we refer to the most used program of this type in the world. At least one of the most used, since Kodi is also more than extended for this type of task.
But of course, there are several reasons for the success of this program, including its enormous stability. To this we add the wide compatibility with all types of file formats that it has, or that we can use on most platforms and devices. It is packed with functions, some more complex and advanced than others, but all of them very useful. In fact, if we investigate a little among their menus, we will surely discover some that we did not imagine.
With everything and with this, here we are going to talk about some somewhat basic functions that will be very helpful when using VLC.
Open and play Internet files
VLC allows the reproduction of music and video files that we have on the hard drive, of course. But at the same time it allows us to stream online content from the Internet directly. In addition, in a simple way, since for this it is enough that we go to the menu option Media / Open network location. Here we can enter, for example, the URL of the site in question.
Add subtitles to videos
It is also interesting to know that we have the possibility of adding external subtitles to the videos that we upload. Sometimes these have their own integrated directly, but many others we have to add them by hand. This is because the texts are in another file, so we have to load it.
For this we only have to access the Subtitle / Add subtitle file menu option, where we already select the file from the hard disk.
Set up an equalizer in VLC
In order to improve the audio in VLC, we can also use the equalizer that the program integrates by default. In this way we will have the possibility to adapt the audio to our needs or to the output device that we have for these tasks. Therefore, all we have to do in this regard is access the Tools menu. Then we click on Effects and Filters , where in the first place we find that we can activate that element.
Adapt the user interface
Although most of us are already more than used to the interface that VLC offers us by default, we must know that we can customize it. So we can change the order of the buttons, which ones we will see, etc. This is something we can experiment with in order to stay with the design that interests us the most. This is something that we achieve just by going to the Tools / Customize interface menu.
Enable advanced controls
By default, when we load a video here, at the bottom of the window we find the usual controls for all the players. But we have the possibility of adding more complete ones, which are called advanced controls. These allow us to capture , repeat and configure loops, etc. Thus, we activate all of this from the menu View / Advanced controls.

And to finish with these basic functions as well as useful, we will tell you that we can configure the player so that it is always in view. By this we mean the possibility that the VLC window is always in the foreground , above the rest of the open ones. To do this, all you have to do is click on the option Always on everything from the View menu.
