All graphics cards have it, but is it useful for anything?

Normally, graphics cards intended for gaming have already normalized this element. Initially, it was intended for a limited number of graphics cards, mainly high-end, but now we can see it in all models (or almost all). We are talking about the graphics card backplate, which is really that important?

Initially only some high-end models included this element to prevent bending of the graphics card PCB . Theoretically they add robustness to the graphics card, something that, to a certain extent, has part of reality. But, would something happen if this element was not included in the graphics cards?

The backplate of graphics cards, more aesthetic than anything else

We have seen over the years how graphics card heatsinks have increased in volume , increasing their weight. The problem is that currently, so much weight is beginning to be unsustainable. It only joins the rear of the chassis and the motherboard connector, which seems increasingly flimsy considering the weight of them.

One of the problems that a graphics card can present due to its weight is the buckling of the PCB. What we call buckling is nothing more than the graphics card bending due to the weight and the force of gravity. To avoid this, manufacturers have included the backplate , which supposedly makes the graphics card more robust.

Actually, to a certain extent this is correct, since sag is eliminated , but at the same time, weight is increased . This endangers the graphics card in the PCIe connector part of the graphics card , which does not have reinforcement and/or protections. So we fix one problem to make another problem worse.

Several times it has been tried to sell that the backplate helps dissipate the heat of the graphics card, something wrong. While it may help minimally , the reality is that the GPU is designed so that most of the heat goes directly to the heatsink.

From being an exclusive element for specific high-end models, we have come to see it in low-end models with a dual-fan heatsink (or even single-fan models). An aesthetic element has been added to most models that only serves to make the final product more expensive.

What would be really effective?

The only valid thing to prevent sag and take pressure off the graphics card are brackets . Some boxes include this element that helps distribute the weight of the graphics card. We can also see these items that are sold separately and they really do a useful job.

We can buy this support on Amazon, for example, from 10 euros , the simplest model. Then we have models with RGB, even ASUS has a solution within its RoG range that is around 50 euros.

We can even make this element ourselves. If you have a 3D printer, you can create your own support with a totally personalized design. Another quick and cheap solution is PVC pipe or a cut-to-size bar can be great alternatives.
